Well, in that case I HAVE to get the kilt or I'll upset your poor, dead Grandmother and she'll never let me land in Idaho.

I am not encouraging deciet to a newly married young man but you will find out a married couple has two piles of money...hers & ours.
Oh, I already shared the knowledge about the award.
I'm going to be using most of it to pay the rent for the time I am over there but before my work permit arrives.
That and to help get a new car since the old one is dead.
Maybe if I could go out and get beat up again...

WooHoo!
I went ahead and got it. Now I just have to wait for it to arrive and then have my Mum take it up for me.
Oh, the Jones!

This may well be true of many marriages but it is hardly an inescapable invariant. You may never have a better chance than right now to determine which way your marriage will go. Lie to her now, or even just withhold important information such as this windfall, and you will push your marriage toward deceit; tell her about it and you will push it toward trust. Your choice.
"It's not our talents that define us, Harry, it's our choices." Albus Dumbledore, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets; the movie, not the novel. The screenwriter expressed this idea much more forcefully than Mrs. Rawlings did.
Best wishes to you for a long and happy married life.
