The Isle of Skye Tartan in 13 oz. Scottish Wool from Marton Mills. You can't ask for a nicer piece of fabric to work with. A beautiful selvedge and quality finish throughout. I really enjoyed working with the fabric when making this kilt.

Actually last I heard Marton Mills and Locharron are the only two places making IoS in wool currently, though i'm sure you can special order it from other places at a higher price. Both of them are very very nice. I've got a 5-6yrd IoS kilt being made from 13oz Marton Mills woven tartan on order currently.

Lochcarron and Marton Mills are the only two companies who currently have permission to produce the Isle of Skye tartan (which is a copyrighted design). They both offer it in 13 oz wool. Lochcarron, in addition, offers it in 10 oz and 16 oz, as well. (I'm not as familiar with MM, so I don't know if they do other weights, or not).

And, as McHummel says, he can supply it in PV, and has obtained the necessary permissions to do so.

MM do sell the IOS in 16oz. I have a swatch on my desk. Their website has most of their swatch book on it. There is also an e-mail link if you want to e-mail them any questions. They have always been prompt with a response when I have e-mailed them. They are a great company to work with.

I think it depends on how much yardage you plan on making the kilt from. If it's six yards or more I would highly recommend the 13oz.

I have had my Isle of Skye for about a year now, and as we both have the same climate, I would strongly suggest the 16oz wool, I have been able to wear my Isle of Skye in some of the worst weather we have had this winter, and been quite toasty in it, it also hangs so very nicely.

I missed the fact that you were up in the "Great White North". Based on that I would second McMurdo's sentiments. You have enough cool weather up there.

The hose I am wearing in that picture are what are billed as winter hose, and my feet were quite dry and warm, also this picture was taken outside of my work, if I were going to be out for any length of time I would have worn my boots, however elegant they are not.
