A question about finding a Tartan.
I am trying to find a Tartan for my next kilt. Is there a Tartan index thingy that will allow me to see examples of the Tartans, without knowing the name or number of the Tartan? I rather like Tartan Finder through House of Tartan, but I can only view about 15 or so then it goes down and I have to re-start my computer to see more (I run a Macbook Pro). Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Michael

Haven't had that problem on a desktop Mac...
...try looking at the Tartan weavers websites...Colin's suggestions are very good...maybe the best thing to do is to look at the actual swatches when you're at a Highland Games where one or another of the kiltmakers has a booth. That'd be the closest to being able to see multiple tartans at one time. The kiltstore tartan viewer comes the closest to being able to do that but it's still looking at one "family" of tartans at one time.

Colin, thanks! That is just the thing I was looking for, and organized by type, very handy!
Here's another question though. Are the numbers universal? I found one I rather liked on the Tartan Finder (1249), but when I put that number into Tartan Ferret, it shows no matches. It may be me, my computer skills easily qualify me as a top flight ditch digger!

You would likely be best to go by the tartan name as I think the numbers are different for each weaver. I am sure someone more knowledgeable than me can answer that one though.

Sta
There is also the Scottish Tartans Authority at www.tartansauthority.com
They list every imaginable tartan you could ever want, and if you feel like it, you could even design your own tartan.

www.tartans.byair.net is my favorite, you can get a full screen.

I personally like the Tartans Authority one (link in above post). However, as far as just being able to search for tartan without knowing names or districts, a good tartan book would be my personal recommendation. I have several books with various clan tartans, etc. Those are always fun to look through and pick out tartans you like.
