Regarding Alistair Sim.

There was question on the BBc quiz Eggheads today about which Scottish Actor played the headmistress in The Belles of St Trinians.

The slightly less than informed contestant said named an English actress!

Of course it was Alistair in drag!

...Priceless!!!!!!!!!!!!...I bet they didn't beat the Egg-heads.

But,....errr emmmm wasn't it Alistair's sister?

I can't say i have an outright favourite,..but one that would be in my top three would have to "Wee Geordie" (1955)
It is one of those typlical 1950's British films, with that innocent, warm, feelgood factor.
It stars Bill Travers as a little Scottish boy who is ribbed by his friends for being so tiny.
So he builds himself up, and ultimately enters the Olypics in the hammer.
I simply love that old flick,......and i feel like watching it right now.
It also stars another of my favourite actors,....Alistair Sim
His goal in life is to enter the Olypics wearing his Father's Black Watch kilt.
So for me,..."Wee Geordie"

I think I recall watching that on telly in England 30 odd years ago. Is this the one where over the years the the plaster ceiling below the lads bedroom floor starts falling from all the press-ups?

I think that might be when I watched it too (although I thought it was just called Geordie). Didn't he send for Charles Atlas (or similar) endorsed weight-training stuff as a little boy then sprouted into a huge young man?

It is the same film, the book is called Geordie, and the film is known as both
Geordie and
Wee Geordie

That's the one I'm thinking, now was that BBC or ITV? Funny the only other movie I ever recall from that age is the Italian Job which was my son's favourite at the same age... "You're only sp'osed to blow the bloody doors off!"

Bill Travers made at least one other kilted film but alas I cannot remember the title. He plays an islander who makes a brief visit to the mainland and doesn't really like what he finds there.

No they most certainly did not beat the Eggheads! Not many teams do but its often not because the Eggheads are so good but that the teams they put against them are so bad! It can be painful seeing the guesses to even rudimentary questions!

No it was Alistair all right. There was a tradition of actors playing female parts, often quite convincingly, on screen, which follows an earlier tradition when men played all female roles. Shakespeare in Love is correct upon this point.
