Kilted in San Antonio
Greetings,
Just another newbie saying hi.
I have been wanting to get a kilt for the past 20 years. It wasn't until my first trip to Scotland eight years ago that I knew for sure that I was "really" going to go though with buying one. At the time, I could have gotten a pretty complete formal kilt kit for just under $1000. Money was tight so I settled for the book So Your Going to Wear The Kilt. This was a great resource and changed the way I looked at wearing a kilt. After more on-line research I realized that owing a kilt was still out of my budget. It wasn't until this past St. Patrick's day when I ran into a family friend that I discovered that I could afford a kilt. After I expressed my desire for owing a kilt she told my about Stillwater Kilts and their Thrifty kilts. That night, I researched the company but I was a little scared. This was a big step, a step that leads to a life-long goal. It wasn't until after I stumbled onto this site that I made my decision. The people on this forum, and their attitudes convinced me that it was finally my time to step into a kilt.
I ordered my Black Stewart Thrifty kilt on the Tuesday night before Easter. I was hoping that it would come in time for the local Highland Games festival. It was delivered on the Friday before Easter. After tearing open the box and laying out all of my purchases I was giddy with excitement. After trying it on and modeling it for my wife I realized that I NEEDED to wear this out in public as soon a possible. The Highland Games were to far away. I needed to show this off now. I almost wore it to Easter services but since I didn't order a sporran nor a jacket, formal/fancy/nice occasions were out, for now. Fortunately my brother-in-law called to inform me that the Easter gathering at their house this year was going to be a casual event. He said that it was a pantless event.
I have to pause here to tell you the meaning behind the phrase "Pantless Fridays." I was part of a group conducting an interview and the person asked me what I like best about working at the company. I said "Pantless Fridays" It was an off-hand remark which was supposed to be taken as a joke. However since the person that was interviewing for the position was a woman it didn't go over very well. Anyway, the story and term "Pantless Fridays" has followed me around for a long time now.
When my Brother-in-law dubbed it a "Pantless" event, a light bulb went off in my head. I knew that I was truly going to make it a pantless event. On Easter Sunday, I wore a kilt for the first time. Unfortunately for my Wife, it has only mde me love the kilt even more.
