Traditional Garter Ties, A Test and Testimonial
I thought there was a recent thread on traditional garter ties...can't find it...sooooo
I worked a twelve hour shift today. Usually I get to come home for lunch and change my kilt hose and take off my flashes or garter ties.
Today, I had to work straight through. Twelve hours wearing the traditional garter ties (mostly seated and with high blood pressure of a fat man) and nary a thought of them. Never uncomfortable, never too tight.
Tied them the latest way with a single wrap then half hitch tucked under.
When I took my hose off there was some imprinting from the elastic at the top of the hose, nothing from the garter ties.
I mention this since my first thought of the traditional garter ties was that they'd be too tight. But they have elastic in them like the flash elastic. The garter tie elastic works just as well but isn't as tight, yet holds the hose up with comfort for TWELVE hours straight.
If you haven't tried them yet, spring for a pair and see for yourself.

Thanks for the great review, Ron! I've noticed the same thing about wearing them myself (and I've worn them exclusively for about a year and a half now). Even when I tie them tightly, they still feel very comfortable and I hardly notice they are there.

I have ordered several pairs from STM and can't wait to try them out. I have a pair of castellated red-and-white diced hose with which the garters will go perfectly.

A similar experience for me.
I've woven several traditional ties a la' James MacMillan (http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/f...392/index.html), using the same knitting device.
Though I've never suffered much from uncomfortable elastic flashes, these ties almost go un-noticed. And they keep hose precisely where it's supposed to be.
Slainte yall,
steve

Matt, I had noticed the same style of traditional garter ties sold here: http://www.mackenziefrain.com/index....gory_id=129415
but that they also offer the colors yellow & mustard.
I have wondered for sometime prior to seeing this if a yellowish color was available for those who desired it, and wonder now if the STM will also carry this color?

I've asked about a yellow color from my supplier before with no luck, but I'll keep asking and if I can ever get them I'll be sure to post here!

Terry,
Thanks for mentioning this -- I've been thinking green hose with yellow ties would be perfect for my Iowa tartan kilt, since green and yellow are John Deere colours, and my grandfather was a John Deere dealer (although he also owned Oliver and Farmall tractors.)

Those are nice, Matt. I like the idea of the fringed ends. At some point I'll be getting a pare of brown Lewis hose, and I'll get garters to go with them.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…
Yes, I have squirrels in my brain…

Those are also great for reenacting. Like I have always said you can not go wrong with the traditional stuff!
