			Farlander's First X-Kilt

First off, much thanks goes to Alan H for his very fine X-Kilt Manual. I would not say that "I could not have done it" with out Alan's manual, but I would not have done it (and I am really glad that I did)! For those who have not yet discovered the manual, check out:http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/x...085/index.html

I found some great tan 10oz bull denim for $4.78/yd and started this silly project last weekend without knowing how to use a sewing machine. Fortunately, I did have some expert sewing advice readily available, (namely, my lovely wife). Again, I would not say that I could not have done it without her advice, but...

OK, here is a pic of the kilt after working on it over the weekend (some 10-15 hours into the project):

At this point, it is almost starting to look like something.

So, another 10 or so hours, and I have a most excellent X-Kilt!

How do I like the bull denim? I think it is a fine choice. It is heavy and substantial like canvas, but much softer to the touch. It holds a pleat OK too. The down side is that it easily wrinkles. The suggested cotton/poly twill may still be the best choice.

Next I will add some cargo pockets so that I can tootle around with out a sporran.
 Pocket pictures soon to follow...

Thanks all, it has been a lot of fun making this! Now I can no longer claim complete ignorance of a sewing machine.
So, here are the pockets. It took me another day to make these. Much of that time was re-designing them. These are similar to the manual's originals, but a couple inches longer, with deeper pleats and with the flap and back piece as one solid piece of fabric.

Why pockets? I like the convenience of not having to wear a sporran if I do not want to.

I was worried that these would be an aesthetic liability, but as they turned out, I think they look pretty good (perhaps even an aesthetic asset). Moreover, they work great. Plenty of room for my stuff...

Michael, great job on the kilt. I like the color and the pockets make it look like a different kilt than you first showed.
I have been pondering the material/color of my next x-kilt, and I think I have found it.
