I rarely wear a kilt pin. I dont know why, it just seems like a hassle and I have no problems keeping my apron down without them. I would much rather have a new pair of hose than a kilt pin.

They really don't add much weight, so are mostly decorative.
As to the hassle, one secret is to get a different kilt pin for each kilt and leave it on the kilt. This also saves the wear of constantly adding and removing the pin.
I consider the pin one more way to add individual expression to the kilt and try to find a pin that matches the kilt in symbolism. For instance, I have a celtic dove pin for my Dove tartan kilt.

All my traditional kilts each have their own kilt pin attached, but I do not wear a kilt pin with some of my modern non tartan kilts.

Yeah, I understand. When I get some spare change a Cunningham pin will be on my list.

I tried this, but then I forgot it when I went to wash my kilt, and the needle behind the kilt pin snapped off. So my only advice would be to take them off before you wash them.

I always wear a kilt pin with my trad kilts, but never with my moderns.
Speaking of kilt pins, I had recently commissioned a Bee pin/brooch thingy from a fantastic artist up in Seattle. He's made primarily from old watch parts. I love the little guy, but he's just a tad to heavy to wear on a shirt or vest. I think I know what to use as a kilt pin in Reno!
Here's a piccie.
