As to the hassle, one secret is to get a different kilt pin for each kilt and leave it on the kilt. This also saves the wear of constantly adding and removing the pin.
I consider the pin one more way to add individual expression to the kilt and try to find a pin that matches the kilt in symbolism. For instance, I have a celtic dove pin for my Dove tartan kilt.
I tried this, but then I forgot it when I went to wash my kilt, and the needle behind the kilt pin snapped off. So my only advice would be to take them off before you wash them.
