I recently got the shortest kilt I have ever worn, a couple of inches above the knee cap. It is remarkably comfortable. I never noticed the kilts hitting the back of the legs until I got this one, which doesn't so much.

I like to wear my kilts a little high, like 2 inches above my belly button, so the "measure to the floor when kneeling method works for me. All my kilts (not that I have many) are either 23 or 24"

The 24 inch length seems to work well for me and I go by the kneel and measure process...just touches the tops of my kneecaps.
I think that the wearer's height factors into this...I'm like 5' 10.5" tall...it's probably a good idea to toss that dimension in with the other info when you talk about kilt length.

above the knee
I like to wear my kilts above the knee, just because I have sexy knees.

The critical thing is to measure exactly the way your kiltmaker asks you to. As Steve says, different kiltmakers do different things with the measurements. If I were making a kilt for you and you sent me the number of inches from your waist to the floor while kneeling, I would add a 2" rise to that, and you'd have a kilt that was way too long. Same would be true if you were making a kilt using the instructions in my book. My measuring instructions are just different from kiltmaker to kiltmaker. Don't try to second-guess your kiltmaker.

I am just the opposite, my knees have more scar tissue per square inch then they do skin. I've always worn my shorts long (just below the knee) and try to do the same with my kilts, but refrain.
I wore one once that was well above my knees and I couldn't handle it and had to wear the waist lower so it would cover at least the top portion of my knees.

Forgot to mention in my post above that, like MacFett, I don't like my kilts wholly above the knee, mid knee is how I prefer them, but at least covering the top is enough.

I prefer my kilts slightly above the knee but when buying a “standard” 24” it will go to the middle of the knee cap.

Either just above the knee or toward the middle, but never lower than that.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…
