X Kilt with tartan lined pleats

So, I got this idea to make a denim box-pleated x-kilt with a tartan lining on the inside of the pleats. I went out to the fabric store last night and bought some denim and some cotton with a tartan pattern. Here are the two fabrics:

In order to figure out how to make it work I made a tiny little test with some box pleats the same size as my x-kilt. You can see it here:


So, all in all I think it might work! I'm going to lay out the pleats tonight and see if I find a method that is easy and accurate. Anyone done this before? Any advice?

At this point I plan on pinning the tartan directly to the denim (where the inside of the pleats fall) and then hemming the entire thing. Then I'll sew the pleats down like in a normal x-kilt with the tartan inside. I'll post more pictures as I move along.

This is exactly how the
F-H.C.A.G made her X-Marks "cheerleaders skirt" except that she put the tartan on the outside and the solid color on the inside.

It kind of makes me think of that old takeoff on "The Last of the Mohicans"

to tartan on the inside and denim on the outside
for to make it all reversible and wearable on his outside

Ok, so I have lay it down upside out with the tartan side on the upside of the downsided denim?

Man, this is just getting more and more complicated.

Here are a few photos from last nights progress. The first it of the tartan sections cut out and laid out in the "inside pleat" marks on the denim.



Next I hemmed the entire length of kilt including the tartan stripes. After hemming, I sewed down the pleats with the tartan inside. I ended up pulling the fabric onto the machine, then pulling out the pins and putting them in on the other side making sure the two edges were lined up.



After I sewed down the pleats, I put some pins in the thing to see how it will shape up.



Hopefully I'll have some time this weekend to keep working on it!
