These ideas about tied and untied bows for married or unmarried men differ within localities in the highlands of Scotland and there could, perhaps, be only 30 miles between one point of view and another.Actually, I think that tradition has all but died.

The highlanders still tie a bow.I have always assumed for two practical reasons.Firstly,as already mentioned,to adjust the fit of the bonnet and secondly, anyone who has been slapped in the eye with the damp tape blowing in the wind will soon tie the wretched stuff into a bow! Or better still,cut the b----- stuff off!

For the record, though, the guy in leather isn't "Ryan"... he's "Bad Ryan". The guy in the toga is "Ryanocrates". "Ryan" always wears a cap... as evinced by this recent picture of me, at the gas station

I like to wear flat caps or driving caps with my kilt outfits.

I have to say, the flat cap does look good with a kilt, though you don't come across the combination too much.

Lately, I'm starting to notice that a Balmoral or Glengarry (paired with a kilt) really does make me think of a uniform. It didn't used to, but it has for the last several years, for me. Personally, the only "Scottish" headwear I own is a big ol' broad bonnet, that I use with historic dress. Other than that, I wear the same ball cap with a kilt that I wear wear with everything else.
