A Win for the Kilties

Four years ago I began singing with our local symphony chorus. One of the requirements was to own or have access to a Tux for performances. Almost three years ago I started wearing kilts full time. Since then everyone in the chorus has gotten used to seeing me in my various kilts. One member even wore his own "tank" once. At one of last years performances, someone asked if I didn't have some sort of Tux kilt.

After last fall's performance of Carmina Burana, I asked the chorus manager about wearing a black kilt in place of a Tux. I explained that I had an appropriate jacket. She thought that it was a good idea as wanted to clear it with the chorus director. Well, she didn't but encouraged me to ask, which I did. I never got an answer because the director was occupied with a family crises.

The night of our dress rehearsal last week, the chorus manager restated as were leaving - black concert dress for women, or slacks and penguin suits for men. I caught her eye and looked askance at her. She said, "Go ahead and do your thing". So I did.

I don't think it would pass the Hamish test, but it passed for concert wear.
The details - I wore my heavy-weight SWK Black Shadow kilt, charcoal hose, black brogues, tux shirt and bow tie, modified "Prince Mowgli" jacket and semi dress leather sporran with chrome cantle.

I got several compliments from fellow chorus members and I'm sure that 2 to 3 thousand people saw the guy in the kilt on stage - a first in Eugene, but not last!

Just wait till they give you the big solo part and you get to take center stage!

In my years of full time wear I have found that if you fit the kilt to the event, wear it neatly and with respect to Scottish heritage, acceptance follows automatically.

I like the Utilitux. Personally, I'll get a tank before one of those; but, I think they compare quite favorably with the TFCK kilt suit.
Of course, I'm not the kind of guy who has much use for formalwear- weddings, funerals & job interviews.
