I think the mercury was used to clean felt hats because it would tend to float loose particals away from the material.

Not that any of that matters. I will keep her in mind if I go looking for a bonnet in the future. Kind of like theidea of an earthtone bonnet... might need a few different bonnets.

I'm kind of seeing a mainly medium brown bonnet, but with patches of green and blue and tan. Maybe like specks of color knitted in. I would guess that the felting would make the specks of color a little larger, but i don't quite know how all that is done.
That might go well with the Weathered Lamont tartan kilt I wear...
