My understanding is that the little (as in filed begh or however the heck you spell it) is correct for the late Rennaisance/ early Enlightment. It was just starting to come into fashion, along with a long plaid. I could be wrong- I have only read one book on the subject, and it was short with mostly pictures and paintings to go by- but those paintings are what I have based my costume around.

As we entered the Ren Fare grounds, a man carying a tiny, pink sun umbrella and wearing a giant seven foot sword came walking by... They also had llama rides. That makes pretty much wearing anything fine for the Ren Fare.

Its actually a requirement to attend one of their events. (Its rather sad that I have more SCA clothes than mundane)

I wouldn't go as far as to say it's a requirement in the SCA to dress period, but it is definitely stronger encouraged at least here in Atedveldt. There are by far more people in the SCA who will attempt to ensure that everyone around is wearing period clothing, but there are still plenty of people running around in Native American Moccosins, black belts, and plenty of other items that wouldn't have been have been around for the time their shooting for.

I don't really go to Renn Faire's anymore, but if I was going to, I would just have to go for the fun, and not to be the period snob that I've been called before.

When I go I look at the weather. In the warm days of August thru mid September, the small kilt is great. From Mid September to April, I like the great kilt.

Who cares if its period... most of the costumes at the fair are not period.

The "philabeg" or little kilt dates no earlier than the very-late 1600s, or perhaps not till the 1720s, if you buy the Englishman Rawlinson theory, which many scholars do:

I'll likely be going kilted to a RenFair in a couple of weeks. I go kilted everywhere else, why should Renfest get any special treatment? I'll also be wearing the kilt as a piece of modern clothing, along with a micro fiber shirt, a ball cap, and a pair of rubber soled shoes- ALL MODERN CLOTHING. If I were going to wear a puffy shirt with it, that'd be one thing, but it sould be fairly obvious to everyone that I'm not going for some kind of period look.

PS. For those who've been kilted at a Renfair before, do you find that kilt checks are common?

I saw my first Utilikilts at the Renfest; black leather kilts with studded belts and "combat" boots not period but they fit into that whole scene. 'Cause the Renfest if for fun, food, laughs, and drinks.
Besides... Kilt....Green tights....Kilts....Green tights.... (despite the respect I have for Panache & Mr. Flynn) I'll take kilts any day over tights, even a "maroon" kilt.
