sounds like it could end up being a bit shambolic, normally witha drummer you have a roll ,strike the drones in then bring the chanter in E, When Im solo pipeing I quite often come in on the melody note, Id suggest a piper and drummer from the same band.

A Sunday afternoon in our church, a drummer (Bodran, snare ) & a piper or two (GHB) in a small church were able to put on a great performance that came in only slightly higher than the church's pipe organ in overall volume. I find the piper and drummer, with occasional accompaniment by a guitar, piano, bass guitar, flute and whistle to be very enjoyable.

The combination of smallpipes and bodhran would create an elegant effect indoors, and as with most things in life elegance trumps volume IMHO.

Now that I think to ask, will this be a full "highland" wedding?
Bride and bridesmaids all in her tartan, Groom and groomsmen in his tartan, minister in tartan, scottish themed decoration and setting, guests in their respective tartan, that sort of thing is what I mean by a highland wedding.

If not, a set of GHP and a snare or tenor drum may be over the top; and I would just have the piper.

You must not have much experience with high-tension heads. If you taped a sock to kevlar... the kevlar would laugh at you.

Damping down the drums will kill the tone anyway, any pipemajor will tell you that you blow for tone not for volume, same with drums, i cant see the point of killing a drum for the sake of reducing the volume when smallpipes or a solo piper would sound fantastic in a church,

I'm in favor of both piper and drummer. And, the safe bet would be to get both from the same pipe & drum band for the obvious reasons

Just how long of a march are you going to do? The drums are not too loud as there are ways to make then quiet-er

I have to dampen drums almost everytime I play inside, which is usually for a civic theatre performance. In this case, A thin piece of polyester slipped between the rim and bottom of the beater head, held in place by the tension of the lugs is just enough to soften the crack, but still leave the head responsive. Do not tape anythig to a drum head! it's like playing a bowl of oatmeal...
