I wouldn't want to be mistaken for something I am not.
I did notice something today. I was out heeping leaves and other things on a compost pile while the wind was blowing. I was wearing a straw hat, and the wind kept catching the brim and almost removing it. I don't have that problem with a flat cap. They seem to fit better. Don't worry, I wasn't wearing a kilt.
I'm guessing most of the people in my neighborhood wear ball caps, but several do wear the "cowboy" style hat. There's probably even a few mexican hats out there, but most people wear hats because of the sun out here in the desert.

I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…
Yes, I have squirrels in my brain…

Yep, there's been a couple of times I've been without hat and gotten a sunburn right through my hair on my scalp. That's not fun at all.
I just happen to come across this old thread where Hank or highlandtide and others are talking about scally caps.

Someone there was talking about using tartan material to make one.
