    Um, thanks Ted. I think.

Actually, I thought the universe had come through with a kilt available in my price range. Didn't happen, though. Not exactly sobbing about it, but was hoping y'all would have some clever ideas.

Not giving up hope, though. But I'm not going to be able to spend any $400 plus on a kilt this year. If the money happens in that amount, there are other things that will need it. Price resistance is very real, here.

Just don't want you to give up hope.

Looks like a PM may have me steered in the right direction! If I end up going this way, I will certainly let all and sundry know the details so anyone else can try it, too.

Thank you all for your advice and good wishes.

Ted, I hesitate to ascribe too much to the universe at large, but it looks like things are going to work out right after all! Within my price range, most likely.

    With a grin of relief,

    -Patrick

scottishkilts.net or tartanweb.net (basically the same company) both have the loud MacLeod for around $260 in a 5 yarder plus shipping, $300 total, unless you get dinged with customs (scottishkilts usually sends via royal mails which often avoids the customs costs).

FM- I can't find the dress MacLeod on either site. They have both ancient and modern colors in Hunting MacLeod, but no bumblebee tartan. Unless I'm looking in the wrong place (entirely possible).

Frankly, at that price, I'd just go with John Higgins' Casual kilt (4 yards at $275). It is pushing the price of an 8-yarder ($400 from Higgins) and a bit beyond what I think I'd be happy wearing for casual purposes.

I thank everyone who has made a suggestion so far. Y'all are a fantastic resource!

When you're within a budget, you have to work with that. I seem to be finding mostly "mixed fibre" kilts in this price point. Actually, we seem to be overshooting the budget.

If you go to either site and look at the tartan finder at the top of the page and put in macleod you should get eight or so tartans, three of which are of a yellow background with predominantly black stripes and one or more thin red stripes, one of which is indeed labelled Macleod(dress) and I believe represents your "bumble bee" MacLeod tartan. You then have to go back to the main menu and look up 5 yard kilts and you should find a category for 5 yard kilt All Tartans for about $261US. All you have to do is complete the order and when you are putting in your specifics list the tartan you want by name and weight. Their website is not as connected as kiltstore's where you can find the tartan then choose items directly made from that tartan, but you can still get the job done.

    HOpe this helps.

I wouldn't stone you. I have two of their kilts and, aside from a minor sizing problem easily remedied, love them both. Well made solid machine built traditional kilts.

Unfortunately the only dress Macleod they list for that $225 price is 10oz fabric either Lochcarron or Batley, lightweight for proper kiltmaking, especially in a five yarder. But a valid option. Good find.
