Congrats Greg,
You'll like Northern Ireland very much. At least you won't be there on the 12th. I was in Derry once on July 12th and it wasn't very pretty.
Even though people sometimes lump the North together with the Republic, it truly is a very different place.

I know the 12th is a very turbulent time, but I wish I was there on the 12th. It would really add a lot to my studies. And I've been to Northern Ireland before. It is so beautiful, and the people are INCREDIBLY nice!

The zoo was very close to where I grew up, part of the grounds contains a crannog, so a very historical site as well. It's on the slopes of Cavehill which is a wonderful open expanse of grass and the like, but it give great over over the lough, over the city, on a clear day you can see for miles....
I haven't been back or nearly 10 years, but have been thinking I should try and engineer a visit this summer sometime....

Add to your studies! Actually, I got a bottle in the back of the head that day, and was picking bloody bits of green glass out of my hair for hours!

We anthropologists are tenacious beings. We like to get in there, the rough and dirty jobs, because of our overpowering curiosity. Look at Indiana Jones (who, by the way, is based off of a man from Beloit). He went on awesome adventures and was rewarded for his bravery.
I'm not going to get the research I want by sitting in my room and reading books about it. I need to get out there and observe it myself.

Very true, one must get into the thick of things for research. In fact, on that day in question, I was only observing the event myself. The bottle was intended for someone else, I just unknowingly stepped in the way! To someone (such as myself) raised in relatively sheltered North America, it was a little frightening to see people foaming at the mouth over ancient prejudices. It was also equally frightening to see those who are supposed to protect you do nothing. I was only 17 at the time and it certainly opened my eyes to the world around me.
Today, however, I think the parade (and the crap that goes with it) is a little more relaxed.
