Scottish Weather and Kilting

Now into May and we really have'nt had a decent Spring, my next important kilt date will be on 24th of this month at Levengrove Park in Dumbarton for the Scottish Pipe Band Championships.
This is aways a great day out, especially if the sun shines, Levengrove Park is a brilliant setting with the River Clyde on one side, and the River Leven on the other with the majestic Dumbarton Castle dominating the park and providing a tremendous backcloth to the event.

The last 2 years, the weather has not been too clement but nevertheless, it was still enjoyable. When the sun shines on Levengrove during this championship, you have a picture of what is truly Scottish and unashamedly I admit that it is right out of what you would see on the front of a shortbread tin.
This is an image that could sell Scotland worldwide and really I cant think of many venues where you are so proud of being Scottish or having Scottish roots.

I think I see what you mean. 2007 photos show a lot of Inverness capes in action, but what a beautiful location!

Bring back pictures of this year's competition and post them? Pretty please! Regardless of the weather, a virtual vacation is always a good thing and one with pipe bands is even better!

I am at a loose end at the end of the month so perhaps I will go.I have never been before and as the event is "my" side of Glasgow it is looking a great idea.Jimmy,is there anywhere handy to park and have you any idea when it starts?

Yes well today is warm and sunny here but it always seems to rain heavily when there is an event taking place. Last year I got gey drookit attending the Scottish Pipe Band Championships at Levengrove Park, I am not sure whether I will be going this year. I have it in my diary and will decide a day or two beforehand, depending on the weather forecast.

I'm glad this post topic came up because I have related questions. This July, my niece and I will be attending the Highland Games in Taynuilt, Argyllshire, Scotland, for the Worldwide Gathering of Clan MacIntyre. For this I will be expected to wear the kilt as I will be piping. But also, we will be venturing out on a coach tour of the Higlhands for another 7 days afterward.

My questions for the native Scots are these:

What will be the midges and weather be like in Taynuilt from mid to late July? Also, for the tour, will it be too chilly in either the day or evening for shorts? Should I also expect frequent rains? (When I was in Scotland all over the Highlands in May 2003, I wore blue jeans and a rain jacket everyday and needed both, but i figured July weather could be quite different.)

The midges will be at their worst for biting exposed flesh in Taynuilt in late July, especially so if there is pleasantly warm, but humid weather, which is usually the case in the west highlands at that time of year. Best apply insect repellant to exposed flesh. It should not be too chilly to wear shorts in the evenings, though if you are dining out in a nice restaurant or hotel, your kilt or long trousers would be more appropriate in the evening. I am hoping to have my annual week in the highlands, based at Spean Bridge, from 26th July to 2nd August and to attend the Arisaig Highland Games on 30th July.
