"new" pc and a new odor. . .
So I got my ebay Prince Charlie in the mail today. Let me say that the description of the coatee as "vintage" was correct. Overall, I am pleased with it, whether it is a conversion or not. There is one issue though which I cannot ignore. The jacket smells, and not just a slight odor, it reeks. I have been hitting it with some febreeze and that has not seemed to help.
I planned to take it to the drycleaner anyway, but I dont know much about dry cleaning. Will drycleaning help with the odor?

Would that be the smell of mothballs? If it is, dry cleaning will help and then hang the jacket in fresh air for a long time.Watch out that the moths don't return though!

I've found this is the best way to get rid of odors. Just don't forget and leave it out in the rain.

Skip the Fabreeze...that stuff smells worse than whatever you're trying to eliminate.
Fast trip to the dry cleaners...and tell them what the problem is so they can try to take care of it.
And there was an article here in the Chicago Tribune a while back wherein the costume person at the Lyric Opera stated that they freshened up stinky costumes by shpritzing them with a 50/50 solution of vodka and water...I haven't tried that one but the person quoted said that it works wonders.

If I buy any second hand kilts or kilt accessory clothing, I always dislike the odour. However clean the garment may be, it will probably have been washed in a different brand from the powder you use or will have been dry cleaned. Once you have worn it a few times it will soon acquire the odour of your other garments and will no longer be a problem to you.

If it smells that bad, how about returning it and asking for a refund?

Three quick tips:
1) Hang it in the bathroom while running the shower on full HOT. The resultant steam will get rid of some of the smell. (NB: don't put the jacket under the shower!)
2) Hang the "just steamed" jacket outside to air out. (NB: avoid hanging it anywhere near birds!)
3) Have the jacket professionally cleaned and pressed. When you get it home take it immediately out of the bag and hang it up in the bathroom (no shower this time) to air out. Smell should be gone.
However, should the smell persist, check the pockets for sardines, etc. which may have been placed there at a previous function.

I had the same trouble with a tweed jacket. I had it dry cleaned, but that did little or nothing so I googled for ideas. What did work was running it on air dry with a couple of sheets of antistatic/softener stuff. In this case I used the unscented variety (that's what my wife buys anyway). After about 30 minutes the awful odor was gone.
I hope this helps!
