I can see how it could be useful to have a list of links to the members you might PM often right in your profile. I never used the old buddy list, but I guess this is a little bit the same. I would still keep a PM to myself with the url links and so on of enemies , that way you don't "name names"...
It's really nice to have that album feature, and you do seem to be able to select whether it is a public or private album. I'm just still trying to figure out the best way to group my pictures together; I might have to start over on a couple of them.
I've looked at the social groups, but I didn't see any that I would fit into.

I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

Not yet. They're still popping up, slowly. I'm not sure where you're located with the others in your area, but maybe eventually there will be a kilt group that you could join. There's also the possibility someone could start a social group unrelated to kilt night groups (like pipers/musicians, kilt-makers, knitters, you get the idea).

That's okay, you should see the bunch that invited me to be their friends.
Oh hi guys, I didn't see you there.

Right out of the blue, before I was even aware of this new function, I was asked to be a friend! I felt like Sally Fields must have felt!
