Will they use the steam locomotive regularly?
Not on this route, but the steam locomotive will see regular use throughout the summer on the Jacobite steam train between Fort William and Mallaig. It is due to travel to Fort William today to begin its season there this weekend and will then run daily till late October.

Nice to see a bit of nostalgia with the steam trains. If you want to go on a steam train this link has details of the Bo'ness one which is handy for Edinburgh - http://www.srps.org.uk/

I see the Alloa line had the usual budget overspend £85 million against the original estimate of £37 million. I wonder if it will colour any decisions on re-opening the Waverley line to Galashiels. It is already up from £110 million to £235 million and no doubt rising and they haven't even started it yet.

Wonderful pics Alex. Thanks for sharing those. I love the idea of reviving old railroads.

We have an old rail line running through my town that is now a park (bike and hiking trails). It runs from Washington DC, through here and out to Leesburg VA. We could REALLY use that as a commuter rail line now as the "Dulles Corridor" is now one of the fastest growing in the Washington area. It's still wide enough for a double track. Of course they'll never reclaim it from parkland though. Too many people use it for recreation and even bicycle commuting.

    Nice thought though.

I am always amazed at how clean the trains form Scotland look, the ballast and trackside are so pristine one might think you were looking at a model railway if it were not for the people in the photos.
