Yeah, well we clarinet players made fun of you trumpet players too. ;-) I played some percussion in high school as well. But I mostly stick to tin whistles now. Nothing that could be heard over the pipes.
I do think a piccolo can cut through anything.
Personally started on trombone switched to Bassoon took all the classes to get a Teaching degree in Instrumental and vocal music. Now learning the English horn (which is really french if I remember right).

Correct, while the French Horn is really German. Learning pipes right now; I've got my teaching degree in Band so I can mess up on any instrument equally well
