I've had the same problem with my Original model Utilikilt, but not my Survival. The Survival uses a set of buttons and loops to connect the two sides together. It's a rather nice system, and makes the Utilikilt stand up well to wind. With my Original, I usually pin the sides together in the same fashion, with each pin going through the back apron for extra support, and the pins being spaced a good few inches apart. (To note, I usually use two pins.) The pins end up getting hidden, as are any potential holes, although I've yet to notice any on my kilt as of yet. Your mileage may vary.
