    Another Flying Kilted Update

Just arrived in Maui for my first visit to Hawaii. Very beautiful with hot muggy weather much like Ohio.

Flew out of San Diego. Wore my USA Kilts U.S. Navy tartan semi-trad. Vest in lieu of sporran.

At TSA took off my vest and ran it though...the usual proceedures except no one in front of me was taking their laptops out of their case...so I thought, gee, I don't need to do that. Wound up getting a stern "lecture" from some tiny little thing about "next time" take it out. Go figure, can't win.

Of course the three buckles on the kilt set off the beeper thing. First they said, "Those buckles don't come off do they?" Good kilt knowledge. Then they wanded the buckles but them asked me to go a ways off to stand on some footprints. I wasn't happy about the distance from my stuff but fortunately my lady was with me and she watched my stuff.

It was the usual arms up wanding, but then they have a new "dance" sorta like the Hokey Pokey. You put your left foot out and they wand you, then you put your right foot out and they wand you. Then you put your left foot back and they wand you, then your right foot back then they wand you. Then...back to the original arms up and they pat you down.

It all seemed to be a polite way to keep from having to stick the wand under the kilt....Just stayed relaxed and flowed with it.

With the current "sardine seats" found it hard to get the pleats arranged when falling down into the seat - the only way to mount them. Sure could have used one of the panic bars like they put in vehicles.

Brought a Macabi skirt for beach wear. Considering that without the pleats to hassle with it may be more comfy for the trip home. We'll see.

Not one single comment about the kilt or wearing a kilt...some "looks" but that's expected.

Anyhow. Here in Maui now...hot, tired, and ready for a snooze. Hope to hit Mulligans soon. Kilted of course.

And yes, I should be on vacation but I'm so dang proud of tinkering with the wi-fi set up here I just had to take it for a flight.

Enjoy the vacation, maybe hook up with other kilties. My last flight was in my SWK Thrifty. No buckles to set of the beepy thingys, either walk through or wand. Probably will get a USAK casual for the next one. I did get a lot of looks for being kilted, all of them envious that TSA couldn't get a beep on me.

Welcome to the state Ron. Have fun over there. Theres lots of cool stuff to see on Maui. If you go watch the sun rise from the top of Haleakala, I might suggest wearing a nice wool tank, because its pretty chilly up there in the morning. Hope the vogs not to bad, makes for nice sunsets though. If you make the trip to Hana, you might want to consider not going regimental, because you may have to change your underware by the time you get there lol Where on Maui are you staying?

Staying at the Grand Champions in Wailea...will endeavor to survive the Road to Hana...brought a bit of a jacket for Haleakala if we get there. My little brother's been coming for many years and is our free tourguide.

Oh wow, I used to live right down the street from where you're staying. I lived in Kihei, right accross the street from Kamaole Beach Park III. Nice area, quite a bit to do over there. Spent many nights in "Lifes a Beach" Have fun over there Ron

As much as I'd like to, I would not fly kilted. My glasses believe it or not set the alarms off. I can't be bothered with a second article of clothing setting it off....and the TSA people at Kennedy airport would just love to hassle you. (I think it's a job perk).

My ankle replacement always sets the alarm off, so I have had the hokey pokey treatment several times. Seems to keep the TSA people happy, which I guess is what counts these days.

Have a great time Ron. Hawaii is one of the finest places on earth to visit. Once you get away from all the tourists, that is.
"A veteran, whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve, is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to "The United States of America", for an amount of "up to and including my life." That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand it." anon

Hey, I "ARE" a tourist now. And thanks KeepofGrass...but so far they haven't been able to pry us away from Little Beach...even with the surf tumbling this olde man like a rock in a rock polisher.
