I agree - the one boss has simplicity going for it in lin with the rest of the design.

I will agree that the one boss is more in keeping with the general look, however, the large bosses in place of the small ones might look good, if that is possible.

Probably the one boss for me but I don't think the three bossed one is too bad either.

I think replacing the 2 side studs with the 2 extra bosses would look real spiffy.

My thanks to you who offered an opinion on this (and to those who hopefully may still).
I went with the one boss solution out of instinct...they say you should always trust your first impression...but the three bosses don't look too bad to me, either.
The thing is that the three bosses is more "bling" and bling's the thing. If it wasn't we wouldn't be so fixated on chrome cantles and chrome buckles. We'd, at the very least, prefer pewter.
Chrome looks tacky to me. Just my opinion. So I wondered if three antique brass bosses was looking a little tacky too...or at least a little too busy.

Something like this?

I think the cantle would have needed to be a bit wider on each side there at the bottom in order that the bosses look balanced on the cantle. Not an unreasonable nor un-attrractive option, however.
I do think that the variation in both size and design of the bosses adds a visual interest that isn't there with the three large and identical ones, however. That would be (was) my first impulse.
