I have a question. What is the large pleat under the overapron used for and how is it used? I have never worn a kilt due to the large investment in buying one, and have never sewn a thing. I feel silly, but am thoroughly confused.

The large pleat that lies under the overapron serves a couple of functions. One is to allow the kilt to open and close as you walk.

Go google "A-line skirt" or "pencil skirt"

Here's a "pencil skirt" though it has a ruffle at the bottom. My, my but isn't that lady pretty?

    and here's another

don't they look nice on the models? Yes, yes.

Now try to walk in one of those blasted things. You can't separate your knees far enough to take a decent step. Who wants to wear THAT? Not me.

Pleats, including the under-apron pleat, allow the kilt to expand and contract, allowing for much freedom of movement.

Secondly, the under-apron pleat allows the over-apron to lie flat without puckering and wrinkling.

Well, I'd wear those -- especially that first one (I love it)!

Go for it Nick. There's nothing like wearing the kilt that you made.
