Sporran Dilemma

Alright, looking for help again. I have a primitive leather daywear sporran, but looking for a nicer one for going out, and also a formal one. Here is my dilemma though. My wife is SUPER anti-fur, and I have a bit of a problem with it myself. Being a hunter most of my life, I have no problem killing for food, but killing for fashion I do have a problem with. I have no problem with leather because most if not all of that animal is used. Now I can probably find a nice leather evening wear sporran, it is the formal one where I think I will run into difficulty. Any thoughts?

Would a cow hide sporran be an option?

The sporran is somewhere in the middle of the picture on me, between the two beautiful ladies. It might take a minute or two to realize there is a third person in the picture.

Seriously though

If your wife doesn't have an issue with cow leather, then this might be an option. I think that is a handsome formal sporran.

Personally, I think a black leather Duin Uasail (or one of the similar styles) from the Ferguson Britt collection works great as a formal sporran:

We have a guy on here who's board name is A_Hay. He makes fantastic sporrans, at good prices. I had talked to him about making me a formal sporran from deer hide leather that I was hoping to send him, but my criteria was that it had to be from a deer taken in Colorado. I couldn't find any that I could afford. I found entire pelts for hundreds of dollars, but that would have been a waste. So if you have the deer hide for it, I'd say get in touch with A_Hay and see what he can do for you. He's currently on his fourth project for me, so I obviously am rather enamored with his work. Here are two examples:







He made a full version of my sons sporran for me, and he is currently making me a pair of arm bracers. And the great thing is that he does it from designs that you supply to him, so every one is a one of a kind.

Oh yeah- and I know he's missing a sock. He had a spider bite on his leg and the flashes were rubbing on it. He insisted on keeping the one up so he could wear his sgain dubh.

How formal do you want to get? It was once suggested to me that a black pouch type sporran could be taken casual through semi-formal.

You could actually hunt it maybe, that way you don't go against principles!
