Hello folks. I live in the area, and I am interested but unfortunately, I will be out of town on the weekend of the 5th (from June 28 - Jul7).
Have fun and a cold one for me.

Thanks for the info, Dee. If I'm able to go, I'd be taking the train. Any recommendations?
P.S. I'd like to arrive Friday afternoon, and I'd really like to see the big fireworks concert. Can anyone tell me where that is held? Anyone planning to go?

I think I might be able to make this one, and I've been looking forward to going to the Royal Mile Pub for the first time. I've heard good things about it!

As for the 4th of July festivities here is a link with info. As far as going to the events...... ......there is not enough bribery money on K Street to drag me downtown into that morass. Ok, perhaps there is but no one is offering any.
Thanks for any recommendations you can make. I can make the trip, just need a place to hang my sporran that weekend.
I definitely understand about the crowds, but that day, I'm the tourist!

4th of July info
Galician,
The Concert is on the Capitol lawn. There is no Metro stop right there. Smithsonian is in the middle of the Mall, several blocks west, near the Castle building of the Smithsonian.
Union Station is about 3 or 4 blocks north of the Capitol building and is on the Red Line. Union Station has a good selection of food. There are also several restaurants along Massachusetts Avenue, mostly to the east of Union Station.
There is also a Metro stop south a few blocks from the Capitol, although its name escapes me right now.
If you haven't guessed, I would suggest Union Station as it is as close as any, has food, and will be where you get off the train from NY.
I have only been to the festivities once in over 15 years of being in the area. Of course I picked a year when it was over 100 all day, but the concert is usually good, as are the fireworks (although I personally think the fireworks at the Inner Harbour in Baltimore are better).
As far as hotels, once again there should be something at several of the Red Line stops. I have never really stayed in a hotel in the area.

I'm thinking Silver Spring, MD. It's right on the Red Line of Metro and just a couple of stops from Wheaton (Wheaton Station is .2 miles from the Royal Mile Pub) and gives easy access to Union Station and the Capitol / Mall.
I"m in a rush now as we are leaving on vacation but I take the internet with me and will try to post some hotels tonight. Crown Plaza on Georgia Avenue, Silver Spring and Hilton Silver Spring come to mind. Silver Spring is also a great venue on it's own. The whole downtown has been rebuilt over the last few years with food, shops, theaters etc.
More to come.

Get to the Kilted Nation in Manassass VA while you're here. It's about half an hour from D.C.

They have some great stuff. I got all 3 of my kilts there and might go this weekend to get another.
TT Reynold's in Fairfax is the place to experiance the local musice scene. One of the best bars i've ever been to and I've never gotten any sh1t for wearing my kilt there.
