For me, I just can't seem to bring myself to buy a walking stick when I can go right into the mountains and cut one myself.
Er,what restrictions? There is nothing better(in the stick world) than spotting a good stick growing and cutting, seasoning and using it.The hazel thumb stick is the most common countryman's stick over here followed by blackthorn.

I have proof that you are correct. A fellow called Gregor from Taynuilt is a frequent visitor to the bar at the Brander Lodge where I stayed last July. Not knowing me, but knowing I was going to do one Munro (Ben Cruachan), Gregor made a quicky hazelwood walker for me. The nice fellow got a dram from me in thanks.

Although it passed the rule of thumb, I beat no wife with it.
