Wow... That was a lot of reading.
Saw quite a few Scottish cowboys at the recent Scottish festival. It doesn't look bad if done right, although in a traditional sense it's not right at all.
The worst DONT was a guy wearing a very formal setup minus the GB's - he had on tennis shoes instead. Wish I had a picture. Formal sporran, jacket, tall, dressy hose and flashes....Tennis shoes....
I think wearing a kilt, in any form, is very similar to wearing a western cowboy "outfit." There's many ways to do it from formal to casual, and there's many ways to screw up. 90% of the time it's just for fashion.
