Nice sticks. Here is a link to the website where I buy mine. I have 5 or 6 from these people. They are very easy to deal with and stand behind their canes and walking sticks. I lost the tip off of one of mine several years back at a very muddy Potomac Celtic Festival. I called the phone number to see if I could purchase a new rubber tip and the lady sent me a replacement, with two extra kilts. They didn't even ask me to pay postage.

For me, I just can't seem to bring myself to buy a walking stick when I can go right into the mountains and cut one myself.
Er,what restrictions? There is nothing better(in the stick world) than spotting a good stick growing and cutting, seasoning and using it.The hazel thumb stick is the most common countryman's stick over here followed by blackthorn.

We carry walking sticks made by Charles Buyers in Ayshire, Scotland. We obviously don't keep their full line in stock, but we'd be happy to order any of them from their catalog for folks. For being imported in from the UK, the prices are actually quite reasonable.

Jock, I didn't know if there might be some sort of restriction on cutting a branch or a sapling down for making a walking stick...The UK and EU have a whole lot of restrictions that seem strange to many of us yanks.

McMurdo, they really are nothing special, but thanks, I will see about getting some photos of them. I should look into where I can get a rubber foot for them, just haven't dedicated myself to looking yet. Thanks to the Marine Drill instructors, when I walk or hike, I tend to move fast, so don't always take my walking sticks with me.

The sheleighleh that I made my mother in law is made from scrub oak from here in Colorado. If you have never seen this oak, it is short, curvy, and tough. It was hard to find a peice suitable, but I managed. Unfortunately, she was short, so it doesn't fit me or the wife!

EU regulations drive us mad too and I would not be at all surprised if there was some regulation or other covering the cutting of sticks, however common sense and courtesy usually suffice. No countryman would leave an area looking as though a squadron of tanks has just passed through, after cutting a handy stick.

I have a blackthorn stick that I bought at a local Irish imports shop:

I think this is the one Colin is referring to.

This is a diamond willow stick I picked up at, where else, Freedom Kilts in Victoria. It is a very comfortable stick to use and it does get lots of compliments. As you can see it is not a lonely stick at all.

    From the left:
one of three blackthorns, recently acquired. One will become a shillelagh.
    Brazos Twisted Stick
    diamond willow
    Brazos River Bend Stick
given to me by a friend. It was hand carved in Zimbabwe.
just a good sturdy bamboo look cane
    blackthorn
sword cane, a father's day gift last year
    hand painted from Mexico
great flea market find, made in Thailand
my lovely wife brought this one home for me, origin unknown
    blackthorn again

I didn't consciously set out to collect canes and sticks, it just sort of happened. Kinda like kilts, I guess.
