The jury is out on whether the hawiian shirt is acceptable attire with a kilt.

I always figured that there were rules for "formal kilting" or even "dress Kilt" but when it comes to casual, pretty much anything goes.
I look at kilts like most look at pants. If I can wear a hawaiian shirt with pants, then I can wear it with a kilt. I'm on my way to becoming kilted full time, and once I do so, I don't want there to be restrictions on what I'm able to buy/wear. Some people would say that sandels are a NO when wearing a kilt, but I would disagree with that also.
Now I do agree with you that it may clash, or look a little "off" to wear a Hawaiian shirt or sandels, or maybe even a cowboy hat. BUT if I'm not wearing a kilt to a formal event then I'm all for comfort. Comfort is one of the top reasons I wear a kilt.
I perfectly understand if you don't agree, but that's ok. We don't have to agree.

The Santa Cruz class of the San Francisco Chapter of the RSCDS (Royal Scottish Country Dance Society) host a dance every year where the theme is hawaiian shirts and kilts. I'm not sure if it's the best look for a kilted outfit, but at least sometimes it is the right look for one.

I havn't found too many shirts, other than solids, that look really good with a kilt. Just my humble opinion.

I wasn't able to make it to the dance but I was planning on wearing a solid color kilt and wearing the Hawaiian shirt tucked in.
Cheers

Now that will pass the kilt inspection, for sure. Well, I think but I will leave that up to the kilt police.

I've seen a few pictures of Hamish floating around here wearing sandals.
I think it's just as good as wearing low-cut hiking boots. Neither are very "traditional" but they look good.
