So what were you studying about those rocks in particular?
We're studying structures that we think form very shortly after eruption in volcanic rocks that form by eruption under glaciers. Because Iceland was completely covered in ice during the last ice age, there are lots of subglacial volcanic rocks that are now exposed. People have studied these kinds of structures (the fins in the first photo) in sandstones in the US desert southwest and in a few places in subaerial volcanic tuffs in the American West, but there's been essentially no work done on them in subglacial volcanics. So, we're at the stage of sorting out the puzzle.
