    Tartans in India?

Are there any tartan patterns that are strongly associated with India? I know that India has the madras weaving tradition that it borrowed from the Scots... Are there any classic patterns that are considered uniquely Indian, or is the only difference in fabric and colorfastness?

Hmmm, when I was in southern India, I did not see anything that resembled tartan.... Northern India near Delhi or Western India near Mumbai might have something though.

I also would be very interested in this as something to symbolize the time while I was there,

Another tartan associated with the Sikhs is the Rattray tartan, worn today by the pipes and drums of the 3rd Battalion, the Sikh Regiment, formerly Rattray's Sikhs.

I don't know that there are any "official" (whatever that means) Indian tartans, but one sees quite a few cotton lunghis made of light blue and white plaid. I suppose it's what would be called a fashion tartan. It's very popular.

    Check this list out: http://www.tartansauthority.com/web/...talTartans.asp

There are two Indian and one Pakistani Regiments with tartans. The Rajput Regt has their own.

The Rajput tartan is very, very nice. As I commented earlier, it is from a regiment based in northern India.
