Here's what happens.
When you upload your photo your computer makes a temporary file of that photo. Whenever you go to look at that particular picture the computer doesn't go to the bother to look at the image where it is being stored. Instead it uses the temporary file. Imagine the temporary file as a "cheat sheet" that allows the image to pop up faster. Even though you have rotated the image at the source, your computer is still using the sideways temporary file.
If you clear your temporary files and then go look at the picture it will be upright because your computer had to go and look at the actual photo at it. It then creates a new temporary file of that image.
