    Very true..

I suppose if there was a standard there'd be more "off-the-rack" kiltmakers than "custom" ones.

Just be happy you aren't a woman. They have so many different shapes and sizes and no two are the same. I can't tell you how many times I go out with my wife shopping, watch her walk into the fitting rooms with a dozen different items only to come out and hand all of them to the associate. Then she'll sigh "They didn't 'look' right." Then I hear about how easy it must be to be a guy and shop for clothes. LOL.

Am I not mistaken in that the 24" includes the fell, so that what should be measured comes below it? In that case, the 22" would be right, so long as the 2" fell is added to to it.

Well that's not the only reason I'm happy not to be a woman. I happen to like them a lot, but that's another subject.

That's like asking your wife if this dress makes her look fat!!

If you have seen pics of me I too am exactly 6' tall. My kilts, when worn at mid rise (the naval), are 22.5" or 23" from the top of the waistband to the hem.

The Rise above the buckles on a Traditional Kilt add to the total length of the kilt. My Tewksbury which fits perfectly is 23 in drop with a 2" rise. (25" total) When I wear it properly the top buckles are at my natural waist just under my ribs and the rise covers my short ribs.

I have a slightly longer torso in relation to my legs so I will take a slightly shorter kilt too. I'm not sure where the "Standard" of 24" comes from but suspect that is has to do more with ease of making them than anything else.

In my experience making Contemporary Kilts gives me some pretty good data to compare body shapes. I find most men at first think they want their kilt to be worn like jeans and this gives them a kilt with a total length of between 19" and 22". Only when worn at full rise does the kilt length approach 23" or 24".
