A New, Soft Sporran

Currently, the sporran I have is a cheap-o and the leather is rather hard and not the most comfortable thing to wear so I plan to buy some materials to make my own and after searching the forums a good bit I have some ideas as to what I'll try to make (a basic day sporran for casual wear of soft, relatively easily handled, black leather).

However, in my searching I found little that gave me insight on how to go about the leather-work and the process of a project like this. For a first one I don't need it to be great, just hold up for wearing often.

Any input, insight, suggestions, or whatever you wanna say would be greatly appreciated. I just need to get an idea of the sort of process and preparation I should be starting to think about and plan ahead for. Thank you!

Note: I probably won't be starting this for a couple of weeks but I'll keep updated on the progress.

I bought some leather remnant at a Tandy leather as well as the rabbit fur.
Cut a piece of leather that acts as the back and the flap (one piece) and sew on a loop on the back (2" x 2 1/2")for the belt (towards the top portion of the body but well underneath the flap portion)and put a snap on the flap.
Cut the fur and top piece to shape, (I glued them together before sewing but not really needed, just makes it easier) sew down a strip to hide the edge at the top, add the corresponding snap to the front.
Take a roughly 2 1/2" to 3" wide strip of thinner leather, the length of the remaining edge and sew it down (face to fur) then flip it out and sew down the other edge to the back/flap piece.

Done.

I visited our local Tandy store the other day to see what I could get to start working leather myself and came away with a three dollar book to help me get started as well as some scrap leather and a beginner's leather working tool set. Keep us up-to-date on your project.

I bought leather off ebay and 2 muskrat pelt I had enough to make 2 sporrans. I think with all of it. I paid about $12 . The leather is nice and will sew with a machine and a heavy denim/leather needle.

Yes, actually, I don't know for sure if I am going to do the front in black rabbit but if the crafts store where I work gets some more in I might be doing exactly that. If I decide to do just the plain leather that I can get at the store (which is enough for 2 or 3 sporrans it looks like) then that was the one that looked simple and it's like what I currently own, only it'll be much more comfortable.

It doesn't make the "Wap" noise either since this one has no tassels.

I fronted the other one I have with some rabbit fur which dampens the noise considerably. I'm planning to forget tassels on this for ease and simplicity.

In the meantime, try some automotive leather conditioner on your sporran. I conditioned my Buzz Kidder this weekend as well as my SWK belt due to a spilled beer over the holiday. The sporran is softer than before, and the belt is noticeably softer (if you've ever seen/held one, they're quite stiff.)
