That is a very good point. And, I may buy a sgian dubh and grind off the entire edge so it really can't be considered a "blade".. I mean I obviously wouldn't get into any trouble carrying a spoon.

At this point why not go ahead and get a "sgian don't" or skip it. I personally like my bottle cap opener and have put it to put it to good use at many a Highland Game. Rab Gordon sells some absolutely beautiful ones.

As long as the spoon was less than 3 inches?

When in doubt about a certain law and your state municipal/penal code doesn't answer your question, I have found that if you write to your State Attorney General you can usually get the right answer, since he or she is the highest ranking law enforcement officer in the state and is often the person who ratifies the laws.
Just be prepared to wait while for your answer and you may have to write more than once. I,m still waiting for the answer to the question of whether or not high capacity pistol magazines are legal in California since the ban expired 3 years ago and I' ve written 4 times now.

Have you checked out how the local law relates to those that carry a kirpan blade?

The law in the UK states that a knife may be carried as part of national dress or for religious reasons. I wear my sgian when in Scotland and the only time I hand it over is during the evening at the door of city centre pubs. The doormen either hold onto it themselves while I'm in having a beer or, in some places, especially at Hogmanay, they have a lock-up box to hold the dozens they might have to care for while their pub is being patronised.

"SMC 12A.14.010 defines a "Dangerous knife" as "any fixed-blade knife and any other knife having a blade more than three and one-half inches (3 1/2") in length."

Anyone cooking in Seattle must have a hell of a time preparing food with their "safe" 3 inch knives! Laws like that should just be ignored.

One has to assume that the law applies to a knife being carried around in public, not to what is kept at home in the kitchen drawers.

The law does not apply to a cook, or anyone who uses a knife as his profession. To save space, I only posted the pertinent part of the code. Sorry for the confusion.

To get back on topic, I know that Cold Steel makes a folding sgian, but it's far more money than I would want to pay for a non-traditional style.

I know that there are a few bladesmiths here - has anyone tried making a folder with a more traditional style handle?
