This sucks. I've been there, and after the last one I spent 9 months basically unemployed and looking. Yes, I substitute taught for a couple of months, but I wouldn't wish that on anybody.
IT is a booming field, how are your computer skills? You can get an MCSA (Microsoft Certified Syatem Administrator) in about 6 months of going to community college if you're interested in computer support and tech in general. An MCSE will take longer, probably 3 quarters of community college work, but commands a slightly higher salary and more admiring glances...
...probably more kilt checks, too.
If you want to talk about IT options, get in touch with me when I get back from Hawaii and we'll go through the possibilities.

Bummer! But yes, look on the bright side.
Healthcare and Travel are the only industries that are growing right now.
Do you like anything to do with pharmacy, medical equipment or nursing?
How about cruise ships, travel gear or leading tours?
Also, read this:

oops, too long.

Also, get a book called "What Color is Your Parachute?"
Good luck!

Plumber: I didn't make that much either, when I was a lawyer.

I don't know if it's a viable or likable option for you, but both my father was and my boyfriend is currently with the USCG and they do "foreign exchange" kind of things a lot. In fact when we lived in Kodiak, I believe there were Canadians who did a winter exchange for cold weather/water training. Perhaps rather than ending up on an ice breaker, or laid off, you could do an exchange? Just a thought. Maybe you could write a nifty log of all your travels and sell it for big money.
The USCG considers Hawaii and Puerto Rico overseas duty you know... not everything is cold nasty weather.

Sorry to hear about your delima. Plumbing is a good field to get into, someone always needs something unplugged, and there are always new buildings being built.

Grant, I don't know you very well, but you seem to have the right spin on things. I'll wish you luck, but I think you'll find a better job than you had without it.

Grant,
This is indeed a tough one. I was in the same situation (laid off) about 4 years ago at age 48. After not finding corporate work after several months I took the CBEST (here in California, this test allows those with BA/BS degrees to work as Substitute Teachers). I quickly remembered why I originally wanted to teach.
So, back to school and a year as a High School Math Teacher (long term substitute), Just finished my first full year teaching High School Science (and acquired my Teaching Credential in Biology and Earth Science).
It's great to be able to touch a life! However, as noted earlier in the thread, teaching is not for everyone.
Goos luck, I know that the right career is out there for you. Take some time and evaluate what is important to you and what you really want to do.
Good Luck,
Marshal Moroni
