Make sure you plan to spend a good couple of hours at Culloden when you go. There's a lot to see, both in the new visitor centre and on the battlefield site itself.
I remember my first visit a few years back. The most striking thing was finding the marker on the Jacobite line which indicated the approximate position of the 400 Frasers who fought on the day. Legend has it that less than a hundred made it home.
It was weird to think that about 250 years previously, not long in Scottish history, my ancestors charged across the field before me to their deaths. It was that personal, family connection that made it more relevant.
