    "What's the occasion?"

OK, this is inspired by another thread. I haven't seen this one discussed in it's own thread in the 8 months or so that I've been here, and I was asked twice tonight, so here's my topic for the evening:

What is your favorite response to people asking "What's the occasion?" or "Why are you wearing a kilt today?" You know, those silly kinds of things!

One of my favorite responses to "what's the occasion" is "I woke up this morning and still had the ability o convert oxygen into carbon monoxide." That leaves 'em thinking long enough for me to make an escape.

I had someone ask me if I was gearing up for St Patrick's Day a week early, to which I responded "St Patty's day only comes once a year, but I'm Celtic the other 364."

And in all truth, the Colorado Irish Festival kicked off tonight, so there will most likely be a few more kilts on the streets of Denver this weekend than usual.

What about the rest of you? Does it get a snappy-witted response or is it not worth the trouble?

    Tuesday

Any holiday not normally associated with kilts is fun, particularly kwanza, yom kippur, and cinco de mayo.

kilt fest: January 1st - December 31st (it's amazing how many people don't catch that one)

Although, I almost never get this question. Most everyone seems to ask why rather than go that extra step and think of a logical reason, such as an event.

I've never given a snappy answer, but now I'm thinking I should! Usually I just say "Because it is [day of the week]."

Luckily, living where I do, people just assume I'm Scottish and forgot to change into my trousers at the border!

    Cheers

I just respond with a "No special occasion." Which usually leads to them asking, "Really?" and I respond with a "Yep." That's about all it takes for me.

I normally reply, "no special occasion, it was just next in my closet"
"A veteran, whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve, is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to "The United States of America", for an amount of "up to and including my life." That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand it." anon

I usually reply "none" (nice 1 word answer) to which they usually look puzzled. The typical follow up conversation goes like this:
    "Are you a bagpiper then"?
    "No."
[insert 5 excrutiating seconds of silence and dumbfounded looks].
    "Then are you Scottish/Irish?"
    "No. I'm actually German"
"Do they wear QUILTS in Germany?"
[somewhere in the conversation they'll call it a quilt]
"some guys might, but not on the whole"
"Well then why are you wearing one?"
    "I wanted to".
    "ummmm.... ok".

At this point, I've usually confused a complete stranger and they are looking a bit 'perturbed' since I didn't fit into 1 of 2 mental categories they have for guys wearing kilts... bagpiper or formal occasion for a Scotsman. At this point, Kelly usually steps in to ruin my fun...

"We own a Kilt company and he wears one every day" - Kelly
"OHHHHH... NOW it makes sense" - confused stranger
"Wearing a kilt didn't make sense before you knew I owned a kilt company?" - Rocky
