I say you handled it very well. I don't think being angry would have made anything better. I ignore those types of people, there's really no point in get upset.

I have no idea why anyone would get so upset or angry for someone calling it a skirt when in fact it is a skirt though its known as a kilt simply because of how its made.
Not an expert on kilts but i assume thats why.

I like Jamie's reply:"Thank you, though most people call them kilts".

I would think that would defuse any situation if it was intended as an insult.

Considering the circumstances, I think you handled it very well.

Apparently her father thought so, too.

    Always agree with crazy people...

    Nice skirt

Thank you, are you Scottish? You seem to know a lot about kilts. They are a type of skirt.

Well handled. I find that no matter how I respond, the tone and intonation in my voice is more important.

I often respond to this comment by saying, "Actually, it's a kilt. It'd be a skirt if you wore it." I say this regardless of the gender of the commenter, but I always do so with a smile on my face and a tone that lets them know I'm joking around with them. I have yet to see someone offended by my retort.

I got the skirt comment yesterday as a sincere compliment from a young lady, and then a "great kilt" compliment by a guy not 2 minutes later.

If you infuse the situation with anger, people are likely to react in kind. Like I said, well handled.

I like the "thanks for checking me out" response if it's a guy. I say it pleasantly and it usually shuts them up, especially if they're with friends. I've only had one woman say, "Nice skirt," and I was on the phone at the time so I didn't stop to educate her.

Slightly off topic here, but along the lines of "nice skirt" how many have received the compliment:

    "Nice Quilt"

They certainly can be warm and comfy, but that's a bit extreme. I have gotten that one numerous times.

One one notable occasion i was complimented with

    "Nice Skilt"

I'm assuming this is a combination kilt and stilt to increase the height of the wearer?

    Cheers
