I tried that, too! The Sport Kilt is sort of the opposite of the SWK economy. Its pleats are straight, but it's gathered at the waist.
They will sew down the pleats, still straight (no taper) but it looks pretty nice that way. At the very end of the thread I linked above, theres a pic of a SK with the pleats sewn. Up top is one I sewed, trying to taper toward the waist.
