Okay men, heres a brief history of me and of the clan.
I'm from Invercargill NZ (Southland Province)(hometown), along with the northern city of Dunedin (Otago Province)(yeap Edinburgh in the Gaelic) was a major settling area for the Scots in NZ, it has a strong pipeband and Caledonian influence throughout, (our Super 14 rugby team are called the Highlanders for example).
The areas outlying it and street names are named after their name sakes in Scotland.
Both sides of my family arrived here approximately 5 years within each other (Mcleod & Cunningham) (1860-1867 or so)
I have a strong & proud history of armed services to the commonwealth represented through the past 6 generations of the family including: (i have no idea how the hell im alive)
G Cunningham (Army - Indian Mutiny)
J D Cunningham (Army - Boer War) (took his own horse and rifle to war...mental)
R G Cunningham (Army - WW1)
C M Cunningham (Army - WW2)(Pacific Island including the Solomons)(grandfather)
J R Cunningham (NZ Police - 30 Years)(Father)
J R Cunningham (NZ Police & AOS) (NZ equiv of Swat)(Elder Brother)
P R Cunningham (Navy 10 years - East Timor, Bougainville)Peacekeeping(Marine Engineer) (thats me)
So i look forward to communicating with others who have inheritied that Gael spirit of loyality and service to their country men. I know that the Canadians and Americans are just as proud, if not more so as we are here in NZ of our roots and our sense of service.
