SWK fabrics weights
a'right all,
wondering if any of the kilted experts could shed some light into the SWK fabric weight?
Meaning, do you know what the approx. weight of SWK's acrylic fabric is equivalent to wool? (10oz, 13oz, etc.)
Also, does anyone know whether SWK's heavyweights are made of 13oz or 16oz wool?
Thanks

Hector,
When in doubt go straight to the source!
Why not email Jerry at Stillwater directly?
Cheers

A couple of years ago I did a review of Stillwater Kilts and mentioned specifically the fabric weight.
If it will help you here is a link to that review.
http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/s...ad.php?t=27789
Since this review I have had an opportunity to examine many Stillwaters. Two Kilts which may be of a different material that the one I originally reviewed came to the shop for minor repair and I was able to weigh the fabric.
In the first review the weight of the fabric was approx. 5.5-6.5oz. per fabric yard.
The two newer Kilts were a bit lighter at 5.0-5.5 oz. per fabric yard.
Both were acrylic but seemed to come from a different weaving company do the tightness of the weave and the fuzziness of the fabric.
This is a review by a Kilt Maker and is after looking at Jerry's product with a very critical eye. So please, don't think I am knocking Jerry or his product in any way.
I really respect Jerry. He offers a product that is exactly what he advertises it is. For the money I believe it is the best deal out there. And his shipping is legendary.

I've heard the wool is 13 oz/yd... It probably is.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

I have read that the SWK standard is virtually identical to the FC 16oz.
And I recently bought a heavyweight from SWK and if I had to venture a guess I would say it is 16oz wool as well.
I could be wrong but I hope this helps
edit: while I was typing a differing answer has been posted.
edit2: And after reading the Wizards review it seems that I am pretty far off base. Good thing I never claimed to be the expert eh?

I have always tempered my killing with respect for the game pursued. I see the animal not only as a target but as a living creature with more freedom than I will ever have. I take that life if I can, with regret as well as joy, and with the sure knowledge that nature's ways of fang and claw or exposure and starvation are a far crueler fate than I bestow. - Fred Bear

Thanks Steve et al,
I was wondering because well, found the exact tartan I'm looking for (ancient Douglas, as the Youngs were septs of the Douglas) on eBay but in 10oz worsted wool.
So with this said, my logic went like this:
If my economy SWKs fit me perfectly and (now that i know the approx. weight) this wool fabric is at least twice as heavy than the acrylic...then I'll buy it.
I've also heard some say that 10oz wool is too light/flimsy for a kilt...but then again, if we have a 5oz acrylic kilt that fits and behaves great, then a 10oz real wool can only be better.
And as always in my case, my 'permanent crisis budget' restricts my purchasing options so what could be a NO-NO for some is a 'good enough' for me.
So, looks like I will be able to make my own wool tartan kilt now with this knowledge, thanks for the replies!

i'm sure, but I sent an email at 1 pm, and as of right now still no answer, which is fine as he's busy running a business.
and just as I thought, I got the answer I needed in this forum in less than 10 minutes.

Don't SWK and FC get their material from the same place?
Sorry to be off topic.
