    Stillwater Children's Thrifty Review

We received our latest kilts today, with the usual lightning fast service from Jerry.

I've heard the Thrifty kilt mentioned a lot, but haven't actually seen one until today.

We figured this would be the most economical way to have our children join the "kilted regiment" for safari to our local games.

I was impressed by the general construction and quality. They arrived properly basted and none the worse for shipping.

Here's a shot from the front, of both children. We ordered the same size for them, so hers is a little long (which is fine for a girl's skirt) and his is just the right kilt length. These are youth mediums. Note the kilt pins, which the kids absolutely love!

The fell of a Thrifty kilt is not sewn down, but I just took about 15 minutes per kilt to sew down the pleats in the fell area (before removing the basting stitches). Here's a pleat shot:

I'm curious to know-if you actually have any taper (unlike young children, who have very little to none), how to sew down the fell? Wouldn't you have to remove the waist band in order to put in taper? This would be very difficult in a Thrifty kilt, since it is also sewn down to a sort of modified lining/stiffener for the top 1/4 or so.

Maybe I'll post that question elsewhere.

All in all, a very good value for the money. Think I'll have to get one too, so we can all be silly together.

    Be well,

I know this has been discussed elsewhere.

I would think that because the waist band is at the top, and therefore represents only the tightest portion of the fell, it would be unnecessary to undo it. Simply fasten the kilt as tight as is comfortable, and let the loose fabric naturally find the proper amount of taper, which you can then sew in.

I bought the same kilt for both of my boys - needed them quickly last November for a family kilted Christmas picture. Jerry got them to us in lightning time, as usual, and for the money paid, they are great...plus, the boys now have the opportunity to go kilted with dad! 2 thumbs up from me!
