As yet another member of that "bunch of guys" you spotted at Harpenden, I too should like to extend a warm welcome to you, this time from sunny West Sussex.
Whilst, regrettably, I am not a piper (I did have private lessons back in the '70s but could not get on with it), there are a number of pipers here at XMtS - mostly residing outside of the United Kingdom it has to be said - so you will have a great deal in common with them ......... if not the rest of us!
Interesting! I used to know Chesham well, having done my National Service in the late 1950s at the Joint Services Staff College which was then based at Latimer House, near Little Chalfont. Whilst there, I danced regularly with the renowned Lucy Clark and her dancers, from Amersham, and I introduced Scottish Country Dancing to the Staff College. I have very fond memories of that part of the world.
Take care,
Ham.

Welcome from Eastern Washington State USA. You're a brave man to start with such a heavy fabric. Lighter fabrics are somewhat easier.
