Hey! I think that tartan is in Pleater's latest story, "Empire of Fashion."

It gives me the impression they were going for the "weathered" or "ancient" look. Looking at it through that lens, it doesn't look bad to me. I admit that I prefer less busy tartans, and more muted colors, but that isn't---to my eyes---ostentatiously ugly.
On Grant, in a thong, however . . . .
